BLOG ASSIGNMENT: Due 9/22
On page eight, Holden quotes Dr. Thurmer, “Life is a game, boy. Life is a game that one plays according to the rules.”

Pursue this analogy. What do you think Thurmer means by this?

As you explore this, come up with your own analogy for what you think......

  1. I think the quote being said by Dr.Thurmer that life can be very successful if you just play by the rules. Just like any game out there, if you play by the rules and try your hardest, you will always come out on top. If you try to cheat your way through life of a game, you may start to succeed, but once you are caught, your back in last place. I think he was just trying to tell this to Holden and hope he would understand so he would start to “play by the rules” and start to succeed in his life. Another analogy that could be said for this quote is “Life is a game no matter how you look at it. And there is always a winner and a loser. And if you follow the rules, you will always come out the winner.”

  2. This analogy means that playing life is like playing a game. In life you face obstacles and in games you face obstacles. While playing the game, following the rules is important. In reality, the rules are similar to the laws. If you try and avoid the laws, more likely your life will not go as expected. Another way this can be interpreted is the rules can be what someone needs to do to make it by in life. People need to go to school to learn and Holden tried to cheat is way through. He wasn’t interested in any of the topics and was just trying to get through it. Thurmer is telling him this because Holden is not playing the game right. He just got kicked out of school for his grades and is not on the right path. He has gotten kicked out of other schools in the previous years because of his grades as well. Thurmer is trying to lead him in the right direction so that he can hopefully begin to play the game of life right by playing by the rules. Thurmer feels that if Holden turns his life around and applies himself more, he would end up as a successful man. Another analogy can be “Take life as a challenge, handle it right because you only get one chance”

  3. When Dr. Thurmer says this he means that as long as you follow the rules in life, whether they be in school or anything else you will get along better than if you do not follow .them. Holden thinks of this quote as "life is only a game if you’re on the side with all the hotshots on it". So unless you are a model person, which Holden is not, will you treat life the way dr. Thurmer described it. By following rules in life you just make it easier on yourself. If you constantly go against the rules you will get caught and there will be consequences. Holden discovered this the hard way and still did not learn. He had gotten kicked out of three schools prior to the one which he was now being kicked out of again. Holden did not apply himself in his schoolwork’s and ended up facing the consequences.

  4. I believe this quote is saying you need to be smart in life. those who make the right choices will be rewarded and those who make the wrong choices will have to suffer a consequence. You have to have morals iin life and believe in doing the right thing. Life is a game is basically saying there are always going to be obstacles to get to the finish line and achieve success. Hard word pays off. you need dedication and perserverance to get far in life and when people are down on you you cant allow that to effect you and you need to stay up on yourself. You need to challenge yourself in life in order to go somewhere and make your life worth something. I prefer the saying Life is a roller coaster meaning you will have your ups and downs because you have your problems in life and you have the great times and memories in your life but every human experiances both during there lifetime. You can't cheat life you can only cheat yourself. Guys who do the right thing will come out victorious in the long run and those who do not do the right thing will eventually have reality catch up with them and slap them in the face. so follow the rules in life and do the right thing. " Life is a book and you write the chapters. "

  5. I think that Dr. Thurmer means that to win or be sucessull in life you have to follow the rules anddo what you are supposed to. You have to try hard and aim for the goal of a sucessful life. You have to apply yourself. This is something that Holden failed to do. Another analogy is that you can't give up and you have to keep trying no matter how hard things get.

  6. This analogy means that there are ways you can "lose" in life and way you can "win" in life. For example, Holden is flunking out of Pency Prep, but he already flunked out of two other schools. This is an example of "losing" at life because he just isn't applying himself when he is actually very smart. Holden is being careless and lazy. This is why Dr. Thrumer is giving him this lecture. He knows that if Holden applies himself, he will end up very successful. Holden doesn't realize that his failure in the present, will effect the way he lives in the future. For example, when someone "wins" at life, they are applying themselves and trying their best at everything they do. This person, in the end will be successful and happy in the end. Holden also doesn't realize that they're no re-do's. If he messes up, thats it. This is why Dr. Thrumer says life is a game. If you follow the rules, you will come out a winner. If you mess it up, you won't be as happy, or you will regret your mistakes.

  7. When Holden goes to see Dr. Thurmer he says, “Life is a game, boy. Life is a game that one plays according to the rules.” What Dr. Thurmer is trying to convey is that Holden is not playing by the rules of the game. Holden is cutting corners by not applying himself and that’s going to make him loose ‘the game’, which can be a metaphor for life, in the long run. Holden knows that he is cheating himself and thinks that it is just a phase; hopefully Holden can fix his mistakes or come out of this phase because time runs out. The clock is always ticking during the game.

  8. Dr. Thurmer is trying to tell Holden about how to play a game. As it states, He says "LIfe is a game that one plays according to the rules." The rules of life to Thurmer could be different from how the rules seem in Holden's eyes. Dr. Thurmer thinks that he is correct and the way to live life is to start thinking of it as a game. If you go to school and pass you go to the next level. You get a job and start succeeding, another level and so on. Holden isn't following the right rules though. So this is the reason he is getting kicked out of school. Thurmer is trying to teach Holden a lesson that he should learn for later on in life. He is trying to tell him that there are rules to be followed and once someone breaks the rules there will be a consequences.

  9. I think that Dr. Thurmer is trying to increase Holden's awareness about how to be successful in life. He is saying that life isn't a very hard thing, as long as you do what you need to do and don't get yourself into trouble you will be able to live your life successfully. Dr. Thurmer refers to life as a game, and when you play a game, if you play by the rules, you have a bigger chance of winning the right way, than if you cheat. This also works well for Holden because Holden doesn't apply himself in school, he tries to cheat and take the easy way out, but that will get you nowhere in life, just like cheating wont get you anywhere in a game. Another example of an analogy that would fit the same message would be "cheaters never win".

  10. Thurmer is trying to tell Holden that he needs to follow the rules in order to succeed in life. Doing what is expected is the only way he will succeed. He flunked out of this classes because he didn’t do what he was expected to do. Thurmer is truing to tell Holden that everyone in life is expected to do and act a certain way in order to be excepted. Thurmer is telling Holden he needs to change his outlook on school and in life.
